Hyden's quilt endings!!

This is a continuation from Hyden's Quilt Beginnings and Hyden's quilt.

Look!! its done. colorful as i had hoped!

After the panel was done, it was time to put the back, insides and panel together.
I used some nice darkish green flannel for the backing and some white flannel for the inside.

made them all be roughly the same size

then went hog wild and sewed along whichever line i met up with!
It was like driving through an old village.
turned out pretty good.

Made the Binding out of some maroon flannel

and sewed it on.

and finally, the BEST part, had a good look at it! all donzooo!

Now, Atlin and I need to get RID of this dang cold
so we can go over and meet the tiny and lovely newborn!!

Probably about 90% of the fabrics were re-purposed
or bought at second hand stores and garage sales!
(mostly bought as unused fabrics)

Thats the beauty of a scrappy quilt.
You can throw so many different patterns/colors together and they just look neat-o.

Babies

has everyone seen this documentary??

It follows the lives (first the births) of 4 babies from around the world: Namibia, Mongolia, Japan and California. A joy to watch. No narration, just great shots of babies doing weird and wonderful things set to pretty music.

I'm on my 4th time watching it...

so dang cute.

Here's a product I like!
We got it as a housewarming gift. (thanx jazzy!)
It replaces saran wrap
and works Great!

Its a beeswax coated material, so you wash it in cold water.

The flats come in 3 sizes.

they have handy dandy tie up containers too...

check it out:

ps- they didn't even pay me to post this! ;0)

atties quilt

This is the Atlin's quilt.

I finished it 4 days before she was born!
A pretty fruitful nesting project.

Its got some prints made by a Dawson,Yukon woman, The Fashion Nugget was the store.

It now, very unfortunately is closed.

So I am glad Atlin gets a quilt featuring her art.

She's becoming quite attached to it.

Hyden's Quilt

Baby Hyden is born!!
He was born on the first day of March...

so I have this fresh motivation to finish his little quiltie!

Here was the: inspiration

so where did I leave off?

the triangles. I cut these out of the panels I made...
that was back: here at the beginnings

all 60 degrees.

6 of them. 2 of them are 27" high and 4 of them are 30" high.

lay them out and arrange them to see how they fit together the best.

note that the 27" triangles are the top and bottom of the quilt.
the 30"triangles are the sides.

top
bottom

then sew three of them together, right sides together starting from the center point going out.

When you've sewn the three together, make sure that they make a straight line.
This is half of the quilt.

I had to add a little extra triangle because somehow mine wasn't a straight line in the end...

(but there was plenty of good scraps to use for this from the
panels I cut the triangles out of)

Then I just cut off extras.

now sew the other three together - the other half of the quilt.

so you will have two kind of equal sides. Make sure they are straight.

the longest straight edge I had was these clear carpet mats. They worked well!

now line them up, right sides together. flattening and straightening them from the center out until you are happy with them. pin it up and draw a straight line to sew along.

I was nervous to sew these two together...

but it worked out just fine!!

unfolding this after sewing was pretty fun!
just like Christmas!

Now fold it in half, joining the top and bottom 27" pieces...

to quote the book:

"fold the quilt top right sides together in half lengthwise
thereby meeting right and left hexagon points"

I had a hard time figuring that one out at first, but now it makes perfect sense.

then fold I folded it again so it would fit on my cutting matt.
and cut (the sides) the points of the 30" triangles to make it square.

what?? cut all those lovely strips that took me days to make?
yes.
you will end up with lots of pretty offcuts...
looks to me like the beginning of a raggedy quilt!
Maybe a quilt for Murial Moss!

Et, Voila!!!

the front panel is done.

LOVE your TREEEE.

secrets of mommyhood and sesame street!

Here's a great article i stumbled upon: Secrets of mommyhood.

at "mom's daily retreat" blog.

humm. what could I add?

1) Don't overdoo it in a day. Motherhood is a tiring job, so find your balance between not doing enough fun daily activities to enrich both your lives and doing too much. (I get waay off balance and overdoo it some days)

2) If you get frustrated, take a breather...
switch the atmosphere if possible, go for a walk, go to a different room, get a babysitter, phone a friend, put on a movie for the kid...
And then think about how this is all going to change so soon and cherish this time!

3) Do not forget about yourself. take care of yourself. You can not take care of others if you don't take care of yourself properly! If people offer help - take it. If you need help - ask for it...

4) Watch lots of vintage sesame street with your kid...

I think I'll have more to add after a couple more years of parenting.

any additions?
